Last year, Rajan Mukharung, 46, became the president of the Adivasi Janajati Sahityakar / Lekhak Mahasangh. Mukharung, who has been raising the issue of identity for two decades, considers himself a 'creative anarchist'.
Recently, Rajan also worked to save the 'Khuwalung' (stone) near Triveni of Tamor, Arun and Tamor, which are associated with Kirant culture. After intense public pressure, the government has said that it will not split Khuwalung but will develop it as a tourist heritage.
Mukharung, author of Madan Award-winning novels 'Damini Bhir' and 'Hetchhakuppa', has published five collections of poems and 'Identity Award Winner' essay 'Ferindo Soundarya'. In recent years, he has been active in the role of social engineer along with literary creation.
Interview with Mukharung, who claims to be an 'evergreen agitator':
Did Rajan Mukharung become an agitator from a writer?
I have been an engineer from the beginning. Since 2056, I have been working to elaborate on the issues raised by the creative anarchy movement. In the meantime, I joined various social and political organizations at different stages. Institutions and banners were needed to fight the 2062 movement. At that time we formed Kirant Writers Association, Adivasi Srashta Manch etc. We are still at the forefront of every movement.
When you go to the field for social justice, you will become an engineer, if you just write, you will become a creator. After all, society does not have to be neutral! That is why I am an evergreen agitator.
Has 'creative anarchy' subsided now?
How cool it is! When it comes to activity, the issue does not always end with creative chaos. Upendra Subba is speaking through cinema. I am involved in every movement including poetry and novels. Hangyugji is also writing. In this way, the three of us are writing and speaking from our own place.
In recent years, your original creations have been published very little!
It is not easy to write any work. My collection of poems 'The night before going to the market' came in 2076. Three works have been published in the last 10 years. Why didn't my creation come on the basis of the novel and question my creativity? Again, it is not written anywhere that a book should be written and printed at the same time.
Did you become the president of the Adivasi Janajati Sahityakar / Lekhak Mahasangh because you needed support?
There is nothing to gain or lose for the person Rajan Mukharung. I don't think a person's success or failure is that great. However, when it comes to community justice, there is resistance from me. Then I don't need support. I have joined this organization only with the realization that the power can be attacked by uniting all. I have led.
You are accused of turning the party around. How many parties are you affiliated with now?
changing the party. I stayed with the Maoists for nine years. After the Maoists became the top party in the first Constituent Assembly election, our issue was dropped. After this, Ashok Rai revolted from UML and formed a new party. I worked there for a year as a co-coordinator of the Cultural Federation.I supported Ashok Rai's party saying that it raises questions of federalism, identity and tribals. Even now, there is continuous cooperation with political parties that share their issues.
Will you vote or not?
I will not only cast my vote but also force it. Because I will not run with the election. Election is an opportunity to inform the people. Some people say they need the right to vote, but I don't believe it. One should have the right to choose one's ideology with confidence.
How do you see the 'democracy is threatened by the parties' as the civil movement is saying now?
Reading the parties' documents, they are not guilty. That is why he could not work according to the document. Everything has gone wrong because of his leadership and his selfishness. All the political parties of today have agreed in the constitution of 2072 BS to be a 'socialist oriented nation'. We have been protesting against the tendency of the party leaders to trap democracy and federalism. We have opposed their actions.
You call yourself a 'rebel stream' but you always appear in the mainstream, don't you?
The understanding here is wrong. When did Nepal's literature, culture and politics become mainstream? Not made at all. Only a few percent of the elite or the ruling class's actions have been implemented. How can this be called mainstream?
To be mainstream, we need to be able to embrace a common culture. If the character of all the powers from yesterday to today is retrograde, then there is no question of considering it as mainstream. Our job is to create a common ground of 'shared character'. Although small in geography, this country is a very prosperous nation in terms of caste, culture and religion. There will be no mainstream unless we move forward with all these.
They needed to restore one, two, three parliaments. He was agitating that everything would be fine if the parliament returned. But we had said that only by re-establishing the parliament, nothing would be right. This country has been undergoing regression for hundreds of years. Our aim is to fight against all of them gradually. So even though I looked different, I was present in the mass civil movement. I was also active in the Creator Movement. At present, I am in the movement of the Federation of Indigenous Writers / Writers.
You are also a celebrity!
How am I a celebrity? Even the big or popular media is taking my second interview today after only ten years. If I were a celebrity, I would be called in one way or another every month.
And the important thing is that I am a person who is fighting with the middlemen. How does the same broker capitalism make me a celebrity? Impossible.
